Michael S. Finke, PhD, CFP®
The American College of Financial Services
Michael S. Finke is The American College of Financial Services’ Dean and Chief Academic Officer. He holds a concurrent professorship in Texas Tech University’s Personal Financial Planning Department.
Dr. Finke is a nationally renowned researcher whose academic interests probe such topics as the value of financial advice, financial planning regulation, investments and individual investor behavior. Investment News ranked him among its “Power 20” in 2013 and 2014, and Investment Advisor magazine named him to its “IA 25” list in 2012.
The Journal of Financial Planning in 2013 published research Finke conducted with his American College colleague, Wade Pfau, Ph.D., CFA. Their study questioned the “4 Percent Rule” for retirement savings withdrawals. The Journal awarded them the publication’s 2014 Montgomery-Warschauer Award, which recognizes the preceding year’s research paper that provides the most outstanding contribution to the profession’s betterment. Finke, and another colleague, Thomas Langdon, J.D., LL.M., CFP®, CFA, won the award in 2013.
Finke has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles. He is widely quoted in many of the nation’s leading consumer publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Time, and Money magazine. He writes Research magazine’s monthly “Finke on Finance” column. He has conducted research projects for such companies as MetLife, Northwestern Mutual, OneAmerica, the Society of Actuaries and TIAA.
